Chronic absenteeism affects your child's learning. When your child is absent for any reason, he or she loses track of class instruction and is at greater risk of falling behind. Chronic absenteeism has been linked to social disengagement and low test scores, and students are less likely to meet goals and assessments. Children who are in kindergarten and first grade are less likely to read at grade level by third grade. This could create a snowball effect that impacts future learning.

Chronic absenteeism is considered when 10%, or 18 days, are missed for both excused and unexcused absences.

If Jane misses 5 days going on vacation with family, has 5 medical or dental appointments, comes down with the flu for 3 days, has stomach issues a day here and a day there, has a headache for a day, and has a sore throat for 2 days, this is 18 days of missed school, or 10% of school being missed for the year. These may all be excused, but this still counts as chronic absenteeism.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO STOP CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM

Schedule doctor's appointments after school. Take family vacations during school breaks. Have your student try to come to school unless they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Days missed are all days or when half a day is missed.

18 days missed = 10%

36 days missed = 20%
