Board Highlights for July 26, 2021

At their July 26, 2021, regular meeting, the Board of Directors:

  • Approved the consent agenda, which contained the July 12, 2021 minutes, the personnel report, contracts and personal service agreements and warrants.
  • Heard public comments about school reopening guidelines. The majority of people providing comment expressed opposition to students wearing masks at school for a variety of reasons. 
  • Discussed return to school guidelines as issued by the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Zorn indicated that the Department of Health plans to release updated guidance by the end of this week. All of this information will be shared with the school board and posted to the district's website.
  • Discussed whether to set a special meeting to discuss school reopening further and voted to further discuss this matter at their regular meeting on August 9, 2021.
  • Agreed by consensus to authorize the superintendent to send out a survey to parents, guardians and staff to poll them on their opinions about wearing masks while at school.
  • Requested the superintendent follow up on ideas presented by parents related to a mask waiver parents can sign if they prefer their child not wear a mask while at school, how to issue clean masks to students throughout the day, and how to best meet the needs of students with special needs who cannot hear teachers through their masks. The board also asked for more information about Department of Health Orders.
  • Heard a brief report on the June budget status report.
  • Learned that ESSER funds for capital projects will need to be reflected in the Capital Projects Fund instead of the General Fund, so the budget will be revised to reflect that change and presented at the budget hearing on August 9, 2021 at 6:35 p.m.
  • Heard a Communication Committee report.
  • Were reminded that the WSSDA Board Self Assessment needs to be completed by July 30th in time for the Board Annual August Retreat on August 6, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Room.

The next regular meeting is September 9, at 6:30 p.m.
