MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

It shall be the policy of the Longview School District to administer medications only when the failure to receive the medicine may result in the student being unable to attend school and/or to be well enough to participate in learning activities.  Medications shall mean all drugs, whether prescription or over-the-counter.

If a student must receive medication during the school day, the parent shall provide written authority and instructions to the school principal.  The parent must also provide written authorization from a licensed health professional prescribing within the scope of his or her prescriptive authority.

The superintendent shall establish procedures for:

  1. Designating staff members who may administer medications to students.
  2. Training staff members in the administration of medications, applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
  3. Receiving parental requests for the dispensing of medications.
  4. Receiving authorization from a licensed health professional prescribing within the scope of his or her prescriptive authority for the dispensing of medications.
  5. Storing medications.
  6. Maintaining records pertaining to the administration of medications.
