CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES/GUEST SPEAKERS
The development of an ability to meet issues in our American heritage of a free society without prejudice, to withhold judgment while facts are being collected, assembled, and weighed, and to see relationships before drawing inferences and conclusions are among the most valuable outcomes of our educational system. The presentation and discussion of controversial issues which have political, economic, or social significance for the student at his/her level of maturity are important to this development.
It is a policy of the board of directors to encourage staff to provide students an opportunity to meet controversial issues and to support staff members conscientiously performing this duty should the consideration of an issue bring attacks from any source.
In accordance with Policy 2340 (“Religious-Related Activities and Practices”), a student may decline to participate in a school activity that is contrary to his/her religious convictions upon request of the student or the student’s parent.
