Do you really want to go to school online?

We are excited to offer the Longview Virtual Academy as an online school option. Before deciding, we want our families to know what they’re getting into. Online school isn’t for everybody.

Some things to think about:

  1. Do you have good WiFi? At this time, Longview Schools cannot offer everyone a hotspot.
  2. Online school takes a lot of self-discipline. There are no teachers in front of you, telling you to get to work. Are you self-motivated? Do you have anyone to help you keep at it?
  3. Online school takes time. Can you stick to a schedule? People who don’t set aside time to do their school work end up with assignments piling up, and things get really frustrating, really fast.
  4. Are you willing to communicate with your teacher regularly, at least by email? Will you reach out for help when something is too hard or confusing?
  5. Online school isn’t a game. Literally. See below.

After reading that, if you think this is for you, here are some tips for success that we KNOW TO BE TRUE:

  • School before Xbox. Modern games are designed to speed up your heart rate and get the adrenaline pumping. That’s how they hook you for hours and hours. However, you won’t be able to concentrate on school work after gaming. Games are entertainment, and study is study. Use the Xbox as a reward for getting your work done. You can’t do your school work “later.”
  • Consistent schedules. Online school is great if you have a job. You already know what it means to stick with a schedule. Treat online school the same way.
  • Communication. Keep in touch, especially when you may have procrastinated and the work piles up. We’re here to help, but since you’re at home we can’t see you right away. You will have to start the communication.
  • Patience. It will take a while to master the program and your schedule. Give it some time. Call for some coaching.
