Fine Arts
Students must complete two years of Art (four semesters) or one year of Art and one year of a Personal Pathway Requirement (PPR). There are several classes that meet multiple requirements for art or CTE. All courses listed in this section of the course handbook meet the Art credit requirements for graduation.

Learn the language of art through a variety of mediums, such as color pencil, charcoal, ink and colored pencil. You will learn drawing techniques for a variety of purposes, how to compose a piece of art, and how to create depth through shading and layout.

Art for the people who have already completed & passed Art l & ll with the skills ready to take on Advanced Art. The knowledge and art skills learned in Art l & ll will be expanded upon and developed even further with the addition of new mediums. Additionally, this class will focus on color and mixed media. Art pencils, prismacolor pencils, ink, charcoal and a variety of paint mediums will be used. Students will create art pieces that will be used for art shows, college entry, scholarships, display cases and a personal portfolio.

CERAMICS I - ART141/ART142
This course provides a foundational study in ceramics which includes a focus on hand-built clay construction and glazing essentials. Creativity and quality craftsmanship are a focus. Knowledge and application of the art elements and 3-dimensional design, while developing both useful and sculptural forms will be emphasized.

CERAMICS II - ART212
Upon successful completion of Ceramics I, students’ can further study design development, exploration in surface manipulation and glazing as well as an introduction to the potter’s wheel (this includes the “mini” wheel). Raku firing and utilizing unique materials in a alternative sculpture will also be explored.

ADVANCED CERAMICS - ART311/ART312
This advanced-level course includes further exploration with different glazes and techniques, using unique supplementary materials, developing a collaborative project that includes Ceramics ll students and unique project work exploring personal and contemporary themes in clay. Focus on the potter’s wheel is encouraged.

This is a beginning course in digital photography and Photoshop. Students will begin from scratch and learn to shoot, edit and print their pictures.

Students interested in developing communication skills through film production will benefit from this class. Opportunities include working with cameras and editing equipment.

DIGITAL DESIGN - CTE743/CTE744
This class teaches students to design and prepare documents using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop software. Students will learn and apply a variety of graphic design principals using cameras, digital drawing tablets and creating tangible products from a variety of materials.

DREAM, DESIGN, BUILD - CTE515/CTE516
This introductory manufacturing class allows students to develop manufacturing skills to creatively design and build artistic projects in woodworking and/or plastics. Areas studies will include CADD, industrial safety, tool usage, project fabrication, laser engraving and 3D printing.

Drama
DRAMA I - ART603
Drama I is a performance based class that introduces the student to the world of theatre through dramatic literature (plays), acting, theatre games, characterization, and improvisation. Students will watch, read and analyze plays, study some theatre history, and learn basics of performance. Includes unarmed stage combat.

DRAMA II - ART604
Taking this class is the next step in the exploration of the theatre. The emphasis is on ensemble and acting skills, but major playwrights will be discussed and several styles of plays will be read and watched. Includes sword combat.

CHILDREN’S LITERATURE AND THEATRE PERFORMANCE - ART609/ART610
This course focuses on reading, writing, and performing literature that is written for children. Children’s stories from many genres and cultures will be read and analyzed, and the interpretation of these stories will be further examined through improvisation, storytelling, and performance. Discussions and written analysis will allow students to explore the meanings and morals in the stories produces for children. As a culminating class project, students write and produce a play for grade school age children.

REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE - ART611/ART612
This course is designed to challenge each person to become a skilled performer. Professionalism and desire for work in the field will be a major part of the challenge and help develop the marketable skills necessary to complete in the world of theatre. We will explore all types of acting methods and then, with that knowledge, we will also explore all types and styles of theatre. Reading of plays, analysis and discussions of various types of plays and written essays concerning the meanings of plays will be required.

CHAMBER CHOIR - MUS231/MUS232
Chamber Choir is for advanced voices that have experience and developed skills in vocal music. Prospective members must demonstrate vocal technique and sight reading skills in an audition with the teacher. Good self-discipline and rehearsal discipline are essential qualities for the student in this group. The class will focus on both performance and theory skills. Literature will be drawn from the great composers of choral music, past and present.

JAZZ CHOIR - MUS315/MUS316
This class limited to advanced choral students who demonstrate skills such as learning music quickly, good intonation, and tone quality. Literature will range from difficult vocal jazz to some pop and choral classics. This ensemble is very active with many performances throughout the year. Members must be prepared to make a commitment because of this time requirement and also must be academically able to handle missing other classes occasionally. Individual members may be asked to purchase an outfit. Members must be in a performing ensemble during the regular school day. (7:00AM Class)

MONARCH SINGERS - MUS331/MUS332
Monarch Singers is an intermediate level choir. Prospective members must demonstrate vocal technique and sight reading skills in a private audition with the teacher. Good self-discipline and rehearsal discipline are essential qualities for the student in this group. The group will strive for exacting, quality performance standards. Like Chamber Choir, this ensemble has more performance opportunities throughout the year.

Treble Choir is for alto and soprano voices in their first year of high school choir. Vocal training, music reading, rehearsal discipline, and group performances are stressed. The class will focus on both performance and theory skills.

Students with limited experience will be provided an opportunity to improve basic performance skills, or learn to play a different instrument. Concert Band is the required ensemble for most freshmen that elect band during their first semester. Marching Band performances are required for this class.

This course provides an opportunity to develop and refine skills through performance of all styles of band music. The Wind Ensemble also makes up the core group of the RA Long Athletic Band. Performance opportunities include concerts, athletic events, and trips to band festivals.
