A course that focuses on the scientific principles related to the cultivation of garden and ornamental plants, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and landscape and nursery crops. Includes instruction in specific types of plants, such as citrus; breeding horticultural varieties; physiology of horticultural species; and the scientific management of horticultural plant development and production through the life cycle.

In Early Childhood, Education and Services students learn knowledge, skills, and practices required for careers in Early Childhood, Education and Services. Students investigate forensics, emergency responses, and ethical scenarios along with various health conditions including TBI, heart disease, diabetes, and infectious diseases. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, medicine, and research.

HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS - CTE433/CTE434
Students examine the interactions of human body systems and explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students will build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through real-world cases, and play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. This course will be supplemented with dissections of a fetal pig, brain, eye, and kidney.

In this hybrid class students split the week between classroom learning (food and nutrition) and physical fitness in the gym. CIM is a process of creating a drawing, and then using computer language to manufacture a part of your design. After drawing a part, students will have fun creating machine parts, artistic metallic sculptures, and vinyl signs.

3D MODELING & DESIGN - CTE 547/CTE 548
A course that teaches problem-solving skills using a design development process. Models of product solutions are created, analyzed, and communicated using solid modeling computer design software. This course follows a syllabus developed by the State Education Department.

The following CTE courses are offered through Kelso School District. Students who register for Kelso courses must fill out registration paperwork at Kelso High School, 1904 Allen St. Kelso, WA; before the end of the current school year. Students who fail to do so will be dropped from the course on the first day of school. Please contact the Kelso Guidance Office for registration information: 360-501-1838. Students who enroll in these classes are responsible for providing their own transportation and attendance at classes in Kelso must not interfere with classes in the Longview School District where there is a different schedule of classes, breaks, and terms than in Kelso.
AVIATION SCIENCE - CTE 615/CTE 616
The Aviation Science course is an entry point into a multitude of careers in the aerospace industry. Students will have the opportunity to earn hours toward their private pilot ground school certificate, as well as other technical certifications. These courses combine a broad foundation in aviation science with hours of hands-on practical experience in unmanned aircraft systems, electronics, and aerospace design and construction processes. Students will walk away from this course with knowledge of aviation safety, an understanding of basic aerodynamics and aviation weather, an introduction to aircraft systems, aerospace environment & decision-making, and a briefing of the National Airspace System. Flight instruction utilizing FFA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Devices to prepare students for both post-secondary education and skilled-labor jobs.

DIESEL MECHANIC TECH - CTE 617/CTE 618
Students will gain hands-on experience with heavy-duty trucks and mobile heavy equipment. Students will learn the fundamentals of diesel engine diagnosis and repair, basic electricity and electronics, hydraulics, air brake systems, fluid power circuits, powertrains, HVAC, transmission, and axle assemblies, and perform preventative maintenance. Safe shop practices, basic tool identification and maintenance, and operation of lifting equipment using proper rigging equipment and techniques will also be covered. In addition to technical skills, units will also cover work ethic, leadership, goal setting, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Students will also have an opportunity to train on LCC’s state-of-the-art truck driving simulator.

This course is offered to either juniors or seniors interested in a firefighting career. Fire Science I is a fast-paced class that teaches the basic firefighter skills needed in the State of Washington to become an entry-level firefighter. This class is offered in two-period blocks, (1 & 2 or 5 & 6).

FIRE SCIENCE II - CTE 611/CTE 612
This course is for students who have successfully completed Fire Science I. Fire Science II students complete advanced firefighter certificate training that further prepares them for a National Fire Fighter I Certification. In addition to firefighter certificate training, Fire Science II students are expected to lead and mentor first-year students and to respond to emergencies with their assigned fire station. In Fire Science II, students are assigned to a fire station and expected to train with their new station while completing their studies and practical skills. In addition to advanced firefighting training, subjects like career planning, resume building, and job interviewing are covered. This class is offered in two-period blocks (1 & 2)

This course presents an overview of healthcare with an emphasis on learning the basic professional knowledge and skills common to any healthcare career, including a high level of responsibility, accountability, and integrity. Second semester, if they choose, students have the opportunity to earn a “Nursing Assistant Certificate of Completion”. Peace Health requires passing of Drug Screen test before clinical experience. Clothing requirements for the second semester: Non-skid athletic type footwear (no slip-ons/slides). This is a high school community collaborative program that presents an overview of skills required for a career in the machining and/or welding trades. This course emphasizes workplace safety, equipment operations, basic professional knowledge, ethics, workplace responsibility, and employability skills. This course is offered to juniors and seniors interested in advancing their skills as related to a high-demand career in the labor trades.

POLICE SCIENCE - CTE 603/CTE 604
Students will receive an overview of the criminal justice system, law enforcement, community policing, criminal acts and their impacts on society, the U.S. Constitution, criminal codes, and problem-solving skills. Students will complete the program for entry-level opportunities in local and state law enforcement agencies. Students with a “B” or better will qualify for dual credit at several community colleges.
